iBetX, the online betting exchange, has announced the winner of its European Handicapping Championship. Phil Baron of Spain pit his betting wits against other contestants from across Europe over three rounds of weekend-long horseracing, to scoop the title of European Handicapping Champion and win the 10,000 prize purse on offer.
Commenting on his winning success Baron said: I am delighted to be the first European Handicapping Champion. The championship is the first of its kind and a great opportunity for punters to really show how good they are. Its been a great challenge. Baron was presented with his winning trophy and a cheque of 10,000 at 1pm on Monday 26th July at the Jockey Club, Portman Square, London.
Organised and sponsored by iBetX in conjunction with a number of online partner sites, the European Championship has been unique in enabling punters from across Europe to play against each other, in backing horses to win and laying horses to lose. This is unlike traditional betting or handicapping competitions,
which consist of competitors choosing only the horses they think will win and being allocated points for picking the right winners.
The Championship has been a great success, said Imraan Malik, director of iBetX. It has been a close competition which has attracted high caliber punters from cross Europe, this has been a great start to what we intend to become a yearly event, he added.
We are already looking forward to making the European Handicapping Championship of 2005 an even bigger and better event next July.
One of the Championships leading competitors, Simon Lake, got off to a great start and made an 80% return over 2 days, Lake commented: The competition isnt for the faint hearted, its not just about picking winners and success isnt just about luck punters need to study racing form and decide whether a horse will win or lose based on those studies.
All three rounds of this years European Handicapping Championship were played online. The top 25% of punters from the semi-final went on to compete for the Championship title and the winning prize of 10,000 in the final, which ran from 10th to 11th July. All participating punters backed and laid horses on the same race cards throughout the Championship, to ensure fairness. |
