| | Excellent Online Casinos News Archive| South Africa Soon to Join Countries that Regulate Online Casinos | | | Publication Date: 21 Dec 2006 | | Just as the United States passes its Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in order to remove online casinos from its shores, other countries in the world are seeing the flip side of the situation and are doing what it takes to actually regulate online casinos. This can be seen in the case of the United Kingdom and many European countries. Lately, South Africa is another country that is joining the ranks of countries who are seeking to regulate online casinos, instead of prohibit them.
Up until 2004, there was no law prohibiting online casinos in South Africa. Anybody who wished to log onto poker or other online casinos could do so quite happily. However, two years ago, the government decided to research the issue of online casinos and how best to regulate the industry and passed the National Gambling Act. Suddenly, players were not allowed to gamble legally at their favorite sites while the Trade and Industry Ministry decided on how to best deal with the situation. However, the Ministry’s two year grace period is up and it is expected that South Africa will vote on regulating online casinos instead of prohibiting them.
South African is just another example of a country that has seen the light and realizes that prohibition in any form (not just in the online casinos industry) simply does not work. It is strange that the United States tends to take a completely different outlook on the subject and continues in its crusade against online casinos.
