Poker is a legendary game, and like any good legend it is extremely hard to track down its exact date and place of birth. Poker history therefore is vague at its beginning and many claim that they are the ones who have brought it to the world.
The earliest mentioning that could be related to poker is in 900 A.D. written in Chinese inscriptions of the Chinese emperor playing Chinese domino with his wife. But the game as closest to the one we know today, was probably born somewhere in the early 1800. the first writings about poker were in 1845 by H. green.
Poker history is also unclear of the origins of the name. It is said that it comes from the French word "pou?" introduced by the French settlers that came to New Orleans and played a card game that included betting and bluffing. Others say it comes from the word poke, used by pickpockets. What is known for a fact is that during the early 1800s the poker game traveled on the Mississippi river boats, then by train and wagon and quickly became the most popular game in America.
In the 1850 five-card stud was invented and then in 1870, another variation called hold'em. In the early 1870s poker made history, becoming a game played in a world championship.
The European contribution to the game was in 1875, introducing the concept of the wild card.
In 1910 gambling in Nevada became illegal. However, draw poker was declared as a game of skill and not of chance unlike stud poker that stayed illegal. That is when draw poker grew and developed, until 1931 when gambling was legalized in the state of Nevada.
The popularity of poker increased during the civil war tremendously and became the great game of America. All these variations and kinds of poker make it such a lively and thrilling game making it possible to have a variation such as dealers choice, where each player in rotation can decide which variation will be played.
Poker became along the years part of the collective consciousness and part of our culture - In films, books, plays and in many homes around the world.
In the 1990s the game of poker made history once more, entering the world of the Internet. Now people can play with other poker lovers from all over the world while their still at home.
